Jane was an underground abortion organization located in Chicago. This organization consisted of people who wanted to provide women with safer and more affordable access to abortions. Some of the members learned how to preform safe abortions. These people were not medical professionals, and many of them didn’t have any medical background at all. They were housewives, college students, maybe even artists. Jane operated between 1969 and 1973 and in that time, it is estimated that members performed 11,000 abortions mostly to low-income women who could not afford to travel to the places where abortion was legal.
